The Hall is what the standard norm of hall is but just so realistic it is transporting. I use this more in live environments as it is more natural. Take the tone knob up to ¾’s and you really get a special psuedo-shimmer compliment without being as overwhelming as most shimmers. This week Neunaber unveiled a new version of their flagship multi-mode stereo reverb, the Immerse MkII, which features new circuitry, and upgraded algorithms that were fully redesigned from the ground up “they are certainly the best I’ve created to date” – says Brian. However, Neunaber's flagship W3T reverb mode has been refined too, delivering asmoother and more three-dimensional sound. Now with adjustable pre-delay, it enhances what you play without covering it.Hall sounds similar but with a nicely judged pre-delay to keep the dry sound further out in front, and is equally luscious with a dash (or more than a dash) of modulation. Plate differs subtly again, adding some metallic density, and this time you can adjust the length of pre-delay. Inevitably, that’s at the expense of modulation – a minor compromise, but perhaps the first sign of the compact format’s limitations.

Spring – The distinctive twerp of a tube-driven spring reverb. Now with adjustable modulation speed, it can achieve a vibrato-spring sound. Detune – Adds a detuned double of the dry signal with reverb, now with true blend control between detune and detuned reverb. The Immerse can do all of this in a box smaller than either of the two reverbs that it has replaced. The shimmer mode on the MK2 is as good if not better than the previous version. That being said, I don’t find myself using it on shimmer all that much. My favourite setting is the W3T algorithm Neaunabers flagship reverb. The main reason I prefer the Immerse over other reverbs that I have tried is the ease of use. The Specular sounded fantastic but was a pain to use. It does have pre sets, but I am more a set and forget kind of person. I don’t need lots of different pre sets, I play in my spare room. I can fiddle with the settings to my hearts desire.The obvious advantage of this is that you have many different sounds living inside the unit at once and flit between them with the twist of a rotary switch, rather than having to ask your PC for help; the two disadvantages are that you lose the near-infinite tweakability of software, and that the control layout becomes mighty crowded. There’s no appreciable difference in price between this and an Expanse box.

Shimmer – Reminiscent of a synth pad that follows what your instrument plays, this effect combines the best qualities of our previous shimmers. That’s four of the five knobs. The 5th knob is a variable knob that changes its purpose depending on the reverb type you use. While other members of the Neunaber family give you one setting on board that be changed using either a computer or the optional EXP pedal the Immerse Reverberator has much more tweakability on the go. With 8 different reverb options including wet, hall, plate, spring, two types of shimmer, +echo and +detune you have a lot available here. And those ultra-ambient washes we were wondering about? They’re in there – but make that a million lovelorn angels. If you’ve ever listened to a cathedral organ and thought the best bit was the slow dying of those massive, dissonant overtones after the organist stopped playing, you’ll enjoy kneeling in front of your amp for a few sacred moments of this. My pedalboard has recently had a bit of an overhaul. Firstly I altered the drive section quite substantially. Then I came across a Neunaber Immerse at a price I really couldn’t say no to. I had been looking at getting a Source Audio Collider to take care of reverb and delay, effectively reducing three pedals to one. Seeing the Immerse put a spanner in the works. I had played the MK1 and enjoyed it very much. The shimmer was excellent, a real standout. I couldn’t however find one at a price I was happy to pay. I then got my hands on the GFI Specular Reverb, which is also excellent and has an outstanding shimmer mode. The Specular did all of the ambient washy reverbs that I like and I had a Boss RV-6 for the more standard plate and spring that I used all of the time.I guess Neaunabers expanse and exp system (which I believe is now discontinued) catered for presets. Whereas the Immerse is more of s standalone multi reverb unit without the need for an additional footswitch to switch between algorithms
